What is New Car Smell, Anyway?

Love it or hate it, we can all agree there's nothing quite like “New Car Smell”. But what is New Car Smell, and is it really all that great?

What you probably don’t realize is that much of your car’s interior is held together by a variety of adhesives and sealants; each of these having their own unique toxic smell. Those scents that they release are actually called Volatile Organic Compounds (or VOCs); lovely right? Over time, the off-gassing of these glues and chemicals can be severely damaging to your health. So how can we keep our cars smelling fresh without slowly poisoning our bodies? And sorry no, the answer is not a Little Tree Air Freshener. Keep reading to learn how to remove and replace that “New Car Smell” with something healthier, and a little more upscale.

HOW TO REMOVE NEW CARE SMELL:

Ventilate the Vehicle

The only way to really remove the fumes of these harmful chemicals is to air out your car. So next time you're driving around, roll down your windows to allow fresh air to flow through- especially on a hot day when these chemicals are more likely to be omitted!

Wipe Everything Down

One way to accelerate this process, and start to remove some of the unnecessary and unwanted chemicals is to give everything a little once over. For your car floor we recommend a fabric + upholstery cleaner, and depending on the material of your seats, you’ll probably want to use the same, or a little leather cleaner.

Use Fragrance Oils

Rather than trying to replicate that fake “new car smell”, opt for something  a little more fresh and sophisticated. This fragrance diffuser  will help keep your car smelling fabulous, without the creepy chemicals from a traditional plug-in. Our unisex, Art Deco-inspired design makes this equally elegant as it is practical. Add a few drops of your favorite fragrance oil to the felt pad, but be careful not to oversaturate. Once you’ve applied the fragrance of your choosing, insert the felt pad into the diffuser and snap to close. Clip the locket onto your car’s A/C vents and enjoy your beautifully scented space! Way better than those toxic adhesive scents.
