Forever Sauce Packets

You know that joke about cockroaches being the only survivors a nuclear holocaust? It’s not strictly true. Takeaway sauce packets will also survive. They live on forever.

In fact, I have a deep suspicion that left unattended, they actually breed and multiply in the backs of kitchen drawers or in the fridge.

But somehow, I can’t bear to throw them out! Why? Because apart from the shameful waste of it all, those little packets can actually come in handy be (especially when reaching for that empty bottle of soy sauce, mid-recipe).

So how to keep those handy little packets from taking over your kitchen? Give them a home of course! By corralling them in a handy place, you won't forget about them and have a better chance of actually using them.

I get those small ceramic containers designed to hold sugar packets at restaurants. Look for them at cooking stores, restaurant supply stores or even at the supermarket. They are the ideal size for holding all of your free takeaway bounty and keep it all ready for when you need it. And trust me, you will need it.  Extra bonus: you now have more room for designer mustard in your fridge door #itsthelittlethings

Try this packet-friendly mushroom recipe, on us:

  • One package of enoki mushrooms
  • 1 tbsp. Olive Oil
  • One lemon, cut in half
  • 4-5 packets of soy-sauce (to taste)
  • One packet Sriracha sauce (optional)

1. Clean and prep the enokis with a quick rinse under a tap and slice off roughly ½” of the bottom.

2. Slice again length-wise to separate them into several long bunches.

3. Warm the olive oil in a frying pan for a few seconds.

4. Add the enokis and one or two packets of soy sauce.

5. Keep turning the enokis over until they start to release some water. Add the rest of the soy-sauce packets.

6. After about 3 minutes, squeeze the lemon juice onto it and turn them over some more.

7. Add the Sriracha sauce if you want a little kick.

8. Serve and eat immediately.

You’re Welcome.
