The origin story behind Singles Day is the stuff of legend. It was supposedly the brainchild of four bored bachelors, studying at China’s prestigious Nanjing University.
China’s now defunct, One Child Policy created an artificial deficit of available single women for them to date.
It was a problem.
So, the bachelors decided to invent a holiday. They planned a day full of drinking and fun activities to celebrate their single status. They chose November 11th, (11/11) because the numbers represent four single digits.

Since that initially sad story blew up and word got around, Singles Day has morphed into something entirely different- another reason to celebrate life and yourself.
